Inflammatory lupus lesions can also leave lighter or darker color change after they settle. Persistent dark discoloration fits the broader concept of hyperpigmentation, but pigment change is not the same as active lupus or permanent scar tissue.

SLE treatment is tailored to the organs involved and disease severity, with the goals of achieving remission or low disease activity, preventing flares and permanent organ damage, and minimizing treatment toxicity.

What Are the Main Goals of SLE Treatment?

Treatment aims to suppress active inflammation, achieve and maintain remission or low disease activity, prevent irreversible organ damage and preserve long-term function and quality of life.

Because SLE changes over time, treatment intensity should also change when disease activity, organ involvement or medication toxicity changes.

How Can SLE Flares and Organ Damage Be Reduced, and When Is Urgent Care Needed?

Long-term SLE care combines UV protection, regular blood and urine monitoring, adherence to disease-control therapy, individualized flare prevention and prompt reassessment of symptoms suggesting kidney, cardiopulmonary or neurologic involvement.

Why Is Sun Protection Important in SLE?
